Tax Basics

J-1 scholars and J-2 dependents

J-1 scholars and their J-2 dependents who were present in the U.S. during any portion of the past calendar year are required to file tax forms with the U.S. federal government.  This is true whether or not you worked in the U.S., gained income in the U.S., or received a scholarship during the past calendar year.

All J-1 scholars, and their J-2 dependents, who are nonresidents for tax purposes are required to file IRS Form 8843.  Dependents (including children, regardless of age) should each complete a separate Form 8843 independent of the J-1.  You may visit Tax Reporting’s website below for some information on Form 8843.

U.S. Income

If you earned any U.S. income during the past year, you will also need to file a tax return with the IRS and the State of Idaho (if applicable).  You must file your tax return on or before April 15 for income earned the previous year.  Employees who are nonresidents for tax purposes may have access to Sprintax Calculus tax preparation software.  Visit the Tax Reporting site below under “Tax returns for International Students and Scholars” for more information.

Boise State University staff are not tax experts and are not able to advise on tax matters.  Please consult a U.S. tax professional if you need help or have questions.
