Counseling Services is available to help with a number of assessment and diagnostic needs for our student body, as well as faculty, staff, and their dependents. We offer specific services for those looking for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Learning Disability testing, general mental health diagnostic evaluations and screening, and Safety Assessments.

ADHD Screening Process

Health Services is committed to supporting students who struggle with ADD/ADHD by offering screenings to substantiate a diagnosis and determine the best possible care. A student qualifies for medication management, if a diagnosis is substantiated. If you have received a diagnosis for ADD/ADHD and/or have received medication management from a community mental health provider and would like to transfer care to Health Services, please refer to the following screening procedures:

ADHD Screening Packet

After you have completed the ADHD Screening at Health Services at Boise State University, you were given an ADHD Screening Packet to complete and return to the front desk at Health Services. If you have misplaced your packet, or if those completing the appropriate section of the packet are out of town, below are the various ADHD Screening Packet sections. You may print it off to give to the designated individual to complete. Only completed packets will be accepted.

Learning Disorder Testing

Health Services is committed to supporting students who struggle with, or suspect they might have a, Learning Disorder by offering screenings to substantiate a diagnosis and determine the best possible care. If a diagnosis is substantiated, a client can obtain a letter of support in order to establish with the Education Accessibility Center on campus. If you have received a diagnosis of a learning disorder in the past and/or have received accommodations from past educational settings and would like to transfer care to Health Services, we would engage in the following screening procedure;

If you have a prior, formal diagnosis of learning disorder, records for evaluation and previous accommodations will be requested through a signed Authorization to Obtain or Disclose Protected Health Information to the community or educational provider, if this has not already been completed.
If or when documentation is received, regarding a formalized diagnosis, it will be determined if there is a substantiated diagnosis via accepted means, including formal assessments and specific testing. If paperwork is current, does not need updated, and meets standards, a consult meeting will be established to determine any further needs of the student.
If a diagnosis cannot be substantiated by an accepted means, a referral to participate in the LD screening will be made.
If a diagnosis can be substantiated by accepted means, but updated information is needed in order to fulfill the request of the client, a referral to participate in the LD screening process will be made.

General Mental Health Screenings/Assessments

Health Services is committed to supporting students who struggle with mental health issues by offering screenings to substantiate a diagnosis and determine the best possible care. Often, more formal testing, such as cognitive or personality testing, is not needed to establish a diagnosis for most mental health related issues. If you have received a diagnosis of a mental health issue in the past and/or have received accommodations from past educational settings due to emotional issues and would like to transfer care to Health Services, we would as that you a records release from previous providers or educational settings, as requested through a signed Authorization to Obtain or Disclose Protected Health Information, if this has not already been completed, for the purposes of continuity of care.

If or when documentation is received, regarding a formalized diagnosis, an intake appointment will be established to determine any further needs of the student. If there is no history of mental health issues, or no previous treatment, a client can simply call Health Services and set up an intake with Counseling Services at (208) 426-1459. Safety Assessments

Counseling Services provides a service specific for Safety Assessments. This service model is conducted in a four (4) session format that consists of a combination of assessment and psycho-education designed to foster an individual’s willingness and ability to care for themselves, reduce risk factors, enhance protective factors, strengthen coping skills and connectedness, and understand resources available to meet their mental/behavioral health needs. Individuals can engage in this service, free of charge, through self-referral or through referral by the Boise State Campus Assessment, Resources and Education (CARE) Team.

Counseling Services, in conjunction with the CARE Team, has heightened awareness of suicide risk factors impacting college students. While we cannot predict with any degree of confidence, which distressed students will eventually attempt to complete suicide, there are behaviors indicative of higher risk including demonstrated suicidal intent or self-directed violence. These student behaviors may require further assessment by appropriate professionals to ensure the safety, health, and well-being of all members of the campus community.

The purpose of an individualized safety assessment referral (SAR) is to address Boise State University’s interests in providing prompt support and resources for students at risk for self-directed violence, while considering the effects of that student’s behavior on other students, employees, and the larger campus community, and/or the impact of the behavior on the student’s academic, residential, and/or extracurricular activities.
