What about long term absences of committee members?

If a committee member plans to be absent for a semester or two then that committee member may, and has the right, to exit the committee.  If the committee member does not choose to leave the committee then the faculty member has de-facto  agreed to participate fully in the process of reading drafts, commenting within the proper reasonable time, answering student questions, and be available for the student’s defense.
