Internship H-Option

Internship H-Options allow students to receive Honors credits for an internship that is registered for academic credit through Boise State and compliant with their degree plan (according to their department’s Internship Coordinator or Academic Advisor). To receive Honors credit, you must complete a series of short reflective essays on your experience as an intern. This will not add additional credits to your internship; rather, the Honors College will recognize the existing credits as Honors flex credits.

The Honors designation for the internship will be awarded after the Honors College confirms that you have completed the essays with sufficient quality. You can expect this designation to appear on your transcript about 4 weeks after the end of the semester.

Internship H-Option Instructions

Step 1: Register Internship for Academic Credit

If you are completing an Internship H-Option for Work U, your professional teaching experience, or clinicals, skip to Step 2.

Otherwise, you must register your internship for academic credit in order to qualify for an Internship H-Option. Typically, you will apply for internship credit through your major and not through Honors. You will earn Honors credit by completing the reflection essays described here. Step 2: Review the Reflection Essays

Navigate to the tab above labeled “Reflection Essays” and review the requirements of earning H-Option credit for your internship.

Step 3: Submit an Application

Submit the online application form, agreeing to the completion description and providing information about your internship.

Step 4: Write and Submit Essays

Follow the completion instructions found on the next tab and submit your essays to Honors College by the Monday of Finals Week.

To receive H-Option credit for an internship, we ask that instead of completing a special project for your instructor, you complete four 750 word reflections on your experience. They can be turned in over the course of the semester or as a group at the end. The focus of the essays should be on any research you do that applies to your area of interest, the personal growth and fulfillment you are achieving through the internship, and the future applicability of the skills you receive from the work.

The essays can be open-ended, but here is one possible way to think about them:

Essay 1 could describe the internship and what expectations you have of it.
Essay 2 could talk about the skills or abilities you feel the job is giving you.
Essay 3 could consider what kinds of things you have learned about the way this field operates.
Essay 4 (minimum 3 pages) should give an overall reflection on the experience.

We recommend Essay 1 be written at the beginning of the internship – either just before it starts or a week or two into it. Essay 2 should be written around weeks 4-6, giving you time to settle in and begin getting a feel for what you’re learning. Essay 3 should be completed around weeks 11-12 since you will have gained some feel for the field as a whole by then. The final essay should be written at the conclusion of the experience.

The essays must be turned in to the Honors College by the Monday of Finals Week. Please submit these essays by emailing them to honorscollege@boisestate.edu in PDF form.
