The Honors College welcomes applicants from varying backgrounds and values the unique experiences and perspectives each student brings to our community. In support of Boise State’s commitment to Fostering a Thriving Community, we strive to promote and advance a fair, accessible environment—one that enables all members of the campus community to thrive, belong, and express themselves freely. We are dedicated to fostering a learning environment centered on academic excellence, intellectual curiosity, ambition, and mutual respect.
Conduct Expectations
Participation in the Honors College is a voluntary privilege, not a right. By joining the Honors College, students commit to upholding the highest standards of academic performance, integrity, and behavior both on and off campus.
Honors students are expected to:
- Exemplify the University’s Shared Values
- Abide by the Boise State University Student Code of Conduct
- Follow policies established by the Office of Institutional Compliance
- Demonstrate respect toward instructors, staff, and fellow students in all settings, including classes, meetings, and Honors-sponsored events
- Adhere to all state and federal laws
Community Engagement
Honors students are also expected to be active and informed members of the Honors community.
Students should:
- Regularly check their Boise State email (at least weekly)
- Stay updated on Honors College events, announcements, and policies
Accountability for Misconduct
Honors students are held to high standards both on and off campus. Misconduct—whether occurring during or outside of Honors-related courses and/or events—that violates this Code of Conduct or harms the reputation of the Honors College is subject to review under the Honors Accountability Procedures.
In addition:
- Academic dishonesty (e.g., plagiarism or cheating) may be addressed through the university’s academic misconduct process and may be grounds for removal from the Honors College.
- Students found to be in violation of the University’s Student Code of Conduct, and who lose good standing with the university as a result, may face additional Honors College consequences.
These consequences may include:
- Probationary status in the Honors College
- Suspension or expulsion from the Honors College
- Loss of the right to participate in Honors College events
- Loss of priority registration
- Loss of other Honors College privileges, as deemed appropriate
Students retain the right to appeal any disciplinary decisions to the Dean of the Honors College.
Accountability Procedures
If concerns arise regarding a student’s behavior or failure to meet program expectations, the Honors Board—comprised of two Honors staff members and one student representative—will review the matter.
Initial Review and Notification
If the Board determines that a violation may have occurred, they will:
- Notify the student of the concern
- Offer the student an opportunity to discuss the matter and present their perspective
The student may bring a silent support person to this meeting. This individual may not speak or advocate on the student’s behalf and is present solely for emotional support.
Outcome and Communication
Following the meeting, the Honors Board will provide the student with a written outcome letter, which includes:
- Whether a violation occurred
- The rationale for that determination
- Any resulting consequences
- The rationale for those consequences
- Information about the appeal process
- Additional resources for support, if applicable
Appeals
Students may appeal the outcome within 10 business days of receiving the decision letter. Appeals must be submitted in writing to the Dean of the Honors College and must be based on one or more of the following grounds:
- New, relevant information not available at the time of the initial review
- Procedural error by the Honors Board that affected the outcome
- Belief that a sanction is too severe
The Honors Dean will review the appeal and provide a written response within 10 business days. The Dean’s decision is final.
Conclusion
The Honors College seeks to cultivate a respectful, accountable, and welcoming academic environment for all students. We appreciate students’ commitment to these standards and encourage open communication, personal responsibility, and community-minded behavior throughout their academic journey.
