Research Interests/Activities

His research integrates concepts from public information campaigns, stakeholder contestation, and risk perception literature’s, especially as these are relevant to complex environmental issues.

His current work focuses on verbal performance in a variety of contexts such as sports and society, and messaging via media platforms to inform the public about science and natural resources. One project is focused on use of pictograms and a standard signage for water contaminants.

Publications

His publications appear in the Journal of Applied Communication Research, Human Ecology Review, Communication Theory, Management Communication Quarterly and Sustainability Science (among others). His applied work includes projects such as assessment of internal and external communication capacities for an Ebola-like incident, and public information in native fish restoration. These generally involve development of public information materials, facilitating meetings and related outreach efforts.

Biography

Dr. Todd Norton joined the faculty of the Department of Communication and Media at Boise State University in 2016. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Utah and served as department chair and associate professor in the communication and society program at The Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at Washington State University (WSU).

Prior to assuming responsibilities as chair, he held administrative posts as director for the Center for Environmental Research, Education, and Outreach, and communications and training officer for the WSU Office of Emergency Management. Today, Todd is the Head of the Department of Communication and Media, and an Associate Professor at Boise State University.

Outside of work, Todd spends the bulk of his free time with his wife, Amy, and their two children. The family enjoys hiking, biking, sports (especially football!), coffee shops and travel. Todd has also been involved in his local fire district for several years, and is a certified wildland firefighter and emergency medical technician.
