Onboarding is a hot topic these days – for good reason. But what passes for onboarding “wisdom” is often counterproductive. Many organization’s onboarding programs are focused on logistics and HR paperwork or endlessly repeat what has always been done for onboarding. But there are decades of research in organizational psychology about what works in onboarding, and most of it is ignored in corporate America. The first few days on a new job have a powerful impact on engagement and performance that lasts for years. Join us as we explore how incorporating some of these ideas into your onboarding programs can significantly improve employee retention and engagement.

    Don Kirkey, Ed.D., has over 30 years of international experience assessing and developing employees and leaders and supporting major change and performance improvement initiatives in partnership with executive management. He has managed onboarding in major corporations. Dr. Don’s doctoral research focused on applying organizational socialization concepts to an inner-city job training program to reduce the dropout rate. Currently, Don is the Principal Consultant for the Trinity Creek Group, a consulting group focused on strategic workforce performance improvement in Charlotte, NC. He teaches assessment, evaluation, and human performance improvement at UNC Charlotte and has taught Needs Assessment in Boise State University’s OPWL program.
