The Pathways Project

What is the Pathways Project?

The Pathways Project, an initiative from the Boise State University Department of World Languages, is a collaborative network of open educational resources (OER) including instructional language teaching materials and professional development created by and uniquely for Idaho’s K-16 language teachers and students.

Teachers and students participating in the Pathways Project come from different fields of study and schools across Idaho to create open (i.e., free), digital activities that support the teaching and learning of foreign languages and promote intercultural competence. We hope to impact the opportunities learners have to connect to the global world!

Why the Pathways Project?

According to the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), interpersonal speaking, listening and reading are at the heart of language learning but are often among some of the most difficult skills for students to master. By providing editable, high-quality teaching materials, The Pathways Project aims to connect teachers and students across the state of Idaho.

The state of Idaho has many rural schools and school districts. In these school districts, many instructors lack access and/or support to provide students with the experiences to reach a higher level of proficiency. Without access to the materials and resources for students to participate in communicative activities, students may fall behind in language proficiency. The Pathways Project hopes to provide instructors the resources they may lack, to further and enhance student learning.

Interpersonal Speaking Activities

The activities provided by the Boise State Pathways OER Language Teaching Repository serve as foundational activities which can be adapted by any language and scaled up or down on the proficiency scale. Activities are created by upper-division language students working in the World Languages Resource Center at Boise State University, in partnership with Idaho K-16 language instructors.
