Learning Spanish has been a great advantage in my life. I spent two years immersed in the culture before attending college, and it has impacted me in so many ways. My view of the Spanish speaking world has grown substantially. I love the differences between people from different Spanish speaking countries and enjoy the diversity that exists among them. Their way of speaking, their food, their festivities are all unique, but they’re all united in their love for their families and respective countries. I have made many friends and this more informed view on such a huge population of the world has been a great experience.

I was accepted and will be attending a Master of Social Work program this coming Fall 2019 semester. I was guided to take this path in my life because of the amazing people I met through my Spanish abilities and the injustices and disadvantages they have to face. I know Spanish will play an integral part in my career as a social worker. I hope to be an instrument in empowering the vulnerable communities around me, and Spanish will increase the number of people I can reach.

The advice I would give to new Spanish students is to get involved with any Spanish opportunities they can. I was able to volunteer as an interpreter for a couple years, which was a great experience in terms of social justice, but also pushed me to learn and improve my abilities. Take advantage of the opportunity to learn and practice Spanish, because it will never be easier than now. And don’t be ashamed!
