Jennifer Stevens is a Professor of the Practice in the History and Urban Studies Departments, where her research and writing focuses on environmental, urban environmental, and U.S. West history. In particular, she examines historic toxic sites, water history, public lands history, and urban landscapes. She obtained her Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis, and her B.A. with honors from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She teaches the Urban Field School, North American Environmental History, and Urban History, as well as co-teaching the Investigate Boise series.
Dr. Stevens is the founder and president of SHRA, a Boise-based historical consulting firm, and also sits on the Idaho Historical Records Advisory Board and the Boise City Planning and Zoning Commission.. SHRA conducts research for a wide range of clients and employs six additional researchers, two of whom are graduates of Boise State’s History Department. The firm offers paid internships to both undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in learning about cultural resource management or environmental law. SHRA was the 2017 recipient of the Excellence in Consulting award from the National Council on Public History for its centennial history of Idaho Power Company.
