Enhancing web accessibility at Boise State

Enhancing web accessibility at Boise State

We’re committed to ensuring that our website — our most important digital document — is accessible to everyone, serving the university’s strategic goal to “Improve Educational Access and Student Success.” Our web community has taken significant steps to make our boisestate.edu websites welcoming and accessible to people of all abilities.

Despite our progress, we’ve noticed a gap in our training outreach: only 10% of individuals requesting new WordPress accounts have participated in our web accessibility training sessions. To bridge this gap and sustain our culture of universal access, we’re implementing a new requirement for all prospective WordPress content authors and administrators.

New WordPress users at Boise State are now required to complete a comprehensive, self-paced online accessibility course to receive an account. This course is designed to equip you with the essential skills and knowledge to create web content that’s accessible to everyone and is aligned with accessibility best practices.

The course takes approximately 60-90 minutes to complete and offers the flexibility to pause and resume at your convenience.

Web Accessibility Compliance Training

Looking ahead

While initially this requirement only applies to new WordPress account holders, our vision extends further. We plan to introduce annual web accessibility compliance training for all WordPress accounts. This initiative underscores the university’s ongoing commitment to creating a digital environment that’s accessible, inclusive, and supportive.

“The power of the Web is in its universality. Access by everyone regardless of disability is an essential aspect…The Web is fundamentally designed to work for all people, whatever their hardware, software, language, location, or ability.”Tim Berners-Lee, World Wide Web inventor
