Free Microsoft 365

Eligible Boise State students, faculty and staff can download Microsoft 365 software free through the Microsoft 365 for Students program.

This software is intended for use on personal computers.

Eligibility

Students

Students must be enrolled and registered for classes at Boise State. Registration status is verified on the tenth day of each semester.

The Microsoft 365 license for students expires 30 days following graduation, or when you are no longer actively enrolled and registered for classes at Boise State.

Once your license expires, you will be able to view Microsoft 365 files using the software and will not be able to edit those files. You do not lose access to the software over the summer or winter breaks if you are enrolled for the following semester.

Employees

Faculty and staff must be current employees in order to download and use Microsoft 365 applications through the Microsoft 365 for Students program.

Program details

The Microsoft 365 for Students program allows eligible students, staff and faculty at Boise State to download, install and use Microsoft 365 software for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android.
Eligible students, staff and faculty can install and use Microsoft 365 software on up to five devices.
Follow the download instructions below and use your Boise State email address to activate your Microsoft 365 for Students license.

Computer requirements

Windows computers

Operating System: Windows 10 or higher
Computer and processor: 1.6 GHz or faster
Memory: Minimum 4 GB of RAM
Disk Space: 4 GB available hard drive space
Display: 1280x 768 resolution or higher

Mac computers

Operating System: macOS 10.14 (Mojave) or higher
Processor: Intel processor or better
Memory: Minimum 4 GB of RAM
Disk Space: 10 GB available hard drive space
Display: 1280 x 800 resolution or higher

Attention Mac users!

If you are prompted during installation to sign into a Microsoft 365 app or provide a valid product key, select “sign into an existing Microsoft 365 subscription” and enter your email address as @boisestate.edu, not @u.boisestate.edu.

For example, use “studentname@boisestate.edu.”

How to download Microsoft 365 (Office) apps

Open a web browser and browse to the Microsoft 365 Portal.
Enter your Boise State email address and select Sign In to download the software.
If you are not already signed in to myBoiseState, you will be prompted to sign in to your Boise State account before continuing to the Microsoft 365 cloud website.
If you already have a version of Office on your computer, be sure to uninstall that software before installing the Boise State version.
Once signed in, your browser will open “m365.cloud.microsoft”. On the left side select Apps.
On the top right of your screen, you will see a button that says “Install Apps”. Click the dropdown arrow and select Microsoft 365 Apps.
This will bring you to “portal.office.com”. You should see “Install Office” prompted on the left-hand side of the screen. Run the execution files to install Microsoft.
