Acrobat Pro is suitable for advanced or specialized PDF work, including:
- Creating or editing fillable PDF forms
- Performing OCR (Optical Character Recognition) on scanned documents
- Advanced PDF editing (modifying text, images, or layout)
- Professional or compliance-level redaction
- Batch processing or automation tasks
- Advanced document preparation for workflows involving Adobe Sign
- Using Adobe Accessibility Checker, which helps ensure PDF files are accessible per university policy 8140 and Title II compliance requirements.

Adobe Acrobat Pro licenses are available at no cost for current Boise State faculty and staff.
The software is authorized for installation only on university-owned computers.

Tasks that do not require Adobe Acrobat Pro
Many common PDF activities can be handled with free or built-in tools such as Adobe Acrobat Reader, Microsoft Edge, Snipping Tool, macOS Preview, or Google Workspace:
- Merge or combine PDFs
- Split PDFs or extract pages
- Rearrange, rotate, or delete pages
- Fill out forms (including many non-fillable forms)
- Add comments, highlights, or basic markup
- Convert documents to PDF (via Microsoft Office, Google Docs, or print-to-PDF)
- Convert PDFs to images
- Compress/reduce PDF file size
- Perform basic OCR and quick redaction using Text actions in Snipping Tool
