Trip Leader TRAINING SERIES 2023-2024

We are educators who develop and positively impact students using the experience as our textbook and the outdoors as our classroom.

Follow these steps to be considered in the hiring of a trip leader:

Step One: Apply on Handshake

Step Two: Go to the Information Sessions – Monday, April 3 from 3-5 p.m. and Tuesday, April 4 from 3-5 p.m.

Step Three: Next stage of hiring (Group Interview) – Friday, April 13 from 1-5 p.m.

Step Four: Go on the Outdoor Leadership Training – Raft Guide School – May 22-28

Step Five: Become a Trip Leader!

Important Dates

Outdoor Leadership Training

Series I: Backpacking- Outdoor Leadership & Leave No Trace

  • Classroom Session: August 8, 3 – 5 p.m.
  • Backpack Training: August 9-15, 2023

Series II: Raft Guide School- Risk Management & Group Dynamics

  • Pool Session: TBD
  • Raft Guide School: May 22 – 28, 2023

Series II: All Staff Training

  • Classroom Session: TBD
  • Trips Training: August 19-20 – Overnight Canoe

All Meetings/Training

  • Biweekly meetings; Wednesday from 8-9:30 pm

**All classroom, info sessions, and meetings are part of the training and are mandatory to be considered for the position.

DETAILS

Who: The Trip Leader Training Series 2023 is designed to provide competence, confidence, and the necessary skills for students who are interested in working as trip leaders with the Outdoor Program. This series is open to all Boise State undergraduate and graduate students who want to share their passion for working with people in the outdoors.

Cost: The series costs is $100.00 for those accepted. This includes meals, instruction, gear, and transportation. Scholarships are available by applying for the Journey Award.

How to apply: Applications are open now until April 5th. Please apply on Handshake.

Requirements: Be able to work three consecutive semesters including Summer 2023 for at least 1 month. Key traits in an ideal Trip Leader candidate include a commitment to their own development, passion for working with people, a supportive and inclusive attitude, and a sense of adventure to try new things. We are looking for a diverse set of students who have the desire and capacity to become great leaders. We encourage everyone to apply, regardless of outdoor experience.

What will you get from the Training Series and leading trips at the Outdoor Program?
Our Training Series are intended to train you into an effective beginner outdoor leader and educator. Participants will gain transferable leadership skills; such as group development, conflict resolution, and outdoor-focused skills such as risk management. This program will expose and help you to develop leadership skills that will benefit you in any job or academic environment.
