Like any experiential learning activity, service-learning carries some level of risk. Instructors, Community Partners, and Students all play a key role in promoting safe, structured, and meaningful experiences.
Below are risk management tips and tools reviewed and updated by Boise State Office of Risk Management & Insurance, April 2024.

Community Partnership Agreement
When to use:
While a formal agreement is ideal for all partnerships, it is strongly recommended when students serve off-campus or work directly with clients.**
A partnership agreement helps clarify roles, responsibilities, supervision, liability, and insurance coverage provided by Boise State and insurance requirements for community partners for service-learning. This written agreement strengthens collaboration and supports safe, effective partnerships.
Boise State provides a Community Partnership Agreement Template that requires no additional legal review by Boise State when used as-is. This document can, however, be revised to suit your partnership’s needs. The Office of General Council can help draft and approve any revision to this document.
If you need help entering into a Community Partnership Agreement or have questions, contact Casey McGee at CaseyMcGee@boisestate.edu.
Field Trip Form
When to use:
Instructors may choose to use the Field Trip Form when students travel to or serve at a community partner site, the scope of the collaboration is limited, and there is no formal partnership agreement in place.
Boise State provides a Field Trip Expectations and Consent Agreement that requires no additional legal review by Boise State when used as-is.
The form describes the off-campus activity and can be distributed to students for signature in advance of participation. Students should also sign a volunteer waiver with the community partner.
Students submit a digital copy of the field trip form to their instructor before the field trip day.
