ChatGPT Edu licensing is transitioning from a centrally-funded model to a department-funded model beginning July 1, 2026.

ChatGPT Edu, developed by OpenAI, is a University-approved generative AI tool that delivers secure access to advanced capabilities for teaching, learning, and research, enabling faster content creation, deeper analysis, and responsible AI use within a trusted environment.

  • Licenses for ChatGPT Edu cost $240 per year. These licenses must be purchased through your department or college.
  • Licenses are transferable, but not refundable.

ChatGPT Edu licenses

If I request a new license in this transition, will I lose my chat history or get a new account?

No, you won’t lose your history and your account remains unchanged. This change is administrative only and transitions the billing for the license.

If I already have a ChatGPT Edu license, do I need to submit a new request?

Yes. Because licensing is transitioning from a centrally-funded model to a department-funded model, you must submit a new request and provide funding information.

If you don’t, or a license can’t be funded by your department, access to ChatGPT Edu will end on July 1, 2026.

When will my department be billed for the license?

Your department will be billed beginning July 1, 2026 (FY27).

I’ve requested a new license for the first time. What should I expect?

The request process typically takes 1–2 business days. After processing, you will receive an email invitation from OpenAI to join the Boise State ChatGPT Edu workspace. Click the Join Workspace button in the email to log in with your Boise State username and password.

If I am requesting a license for the first time or because my previous license expired, will I need to wait until July 1 to access it?

No. You will have access to ChatGPT Edu as soon as your request is processed and approved. Your department will not be billed until July 1, 2026.

Can I use ChatGPT without an Edu license?

No. Access to ChatGPT at Boise State requires an Edu license.

Are there alternatives to ChatGPT Edu?
