Sonography Prerequisites

Candidates for the Boise State Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program must meet the following prerequisites:

  • Credentialed, clinically-based health care provider graduated from a regionally accredited institution of higher education (minimum of an AS degree) i.e., Radiography, Respiratory Therapy, Nursing, etc.
    • Graduates of two-year allied health education programs that are patient-care related.
      • Two-year programs are 24 full-time consecutive calendar months
      • Full-time is 24 hours per week for at least 48 weeks per year
        • Does not include general course work such as English, Math, etc.
    • Preference will be given to radiographers in the selection process.
    • Applicants may be completing the final semester of their direct patient care education at the time of application.
    • Applicants must hold an active registration and/or be licensed in good standing with the appropriate state and/or national agency.
    • Acceptance into the Program will be contingent upon successfully passing the appropriate national examination by August 1 of the year accepted.
  • Completion of the general prerequisite course work:
    • ENGL 101 Introduction to College Writing
    • ENGL 102 Introduction to College Writing and Research
    • MATH 143 Precalculus I: Algebraic Functions or MATH 170 Calculus I or ACT of 27
    • Three credit statistics course
    • BIOL 227-228 Anatomy and Physiology
    • HLTH 101 Medical Terminology
    • CHEM 101/L Essentials of Chemistry I OR CHEM 111/111L General Chemistry I
    • ITM 104, 105, 106 (or successful completion of the COBE Computer Placement Exam for Word Processing, Spreadsheet, and Database sections)
  • A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Complete application, transcripts, and reference forms must be received in the Department of Radiologic Sciences at Boise State University no later than March 1 to be considered for the program each fall.
